The Challenge

A large retail customer needed to ship multiple components to several locations across the U.S. The in-store signage needed to be specific to the planogram for each specific location, the multiple packages had to be tracked, and the seasonal material had to be distributed and displayed at the exact same date across locations. The existing workflow process was complicated and costly, delayed time to market, and required a large team.

The Solution

To address the challenge Marketing.com knew we’d need to develop a custom software built specifically for this customer’s complex order and fulfillment needs. The custom packaging software gave intuitive assembly line assignments to organize similar items into the least number of boxes, while keeping them within weight limits, and included smart packing labels indicating total number of packages (i.e., “pkg. 2 of 18”) and itemized tracking information. To increase speed to market, one of our centrally based production facilities became the fulfillment hub for all orders.

Results

This new smart fulfillment program provided ease of trackability for every shipment made, and each shipment was fully itemized and accounted for. Along with increased speed to market, the customer saved approximately $2.6 million per year in freight and custom box costs. By shipping from Marketing.com’s centrally located facility, the customer saved $900,000 per year on freight costs. The customer saw a positive impact to workflow efficiency across the board.
